# Payout fees

> Set who pays the payout fee on ACH, instant, and push-to-card payouts with feePaidBy on transfers and payment links, and what happens on returns.

Each payout has a fee set by your [fee plan](/guides/billing/plan-options/index.md). By default the sending wallet pays it; you can pass it to the recipient instead, per rail.

Offering a no-fee standard ACH option next to faster, recipient-paid options lets recipients choose speed or cost themselves.

## Set who pays the fee

### On a transfer

Set `feePaidBy.payout` on the [create transfer](/api/money-movement/transfers/create/index.md) request. It applies to whichever payout rail the destination payment method uses. If omitted, it defaults to `source`.

### On a payment link

A payout [payment link](/guides/accept-payments/payment-links/index.md) lets the recipient pick a rail, so `payout.feePaidBy` takes one key per rail. Any key you leave out defaults to `source`.

Deferred delivery sends a push-to-card payout 24 to 48 hours later. Set it with `destination.cardDetails.scheduledDeliveryOn` on a transfer (see [push to card](/guides/send-payments/push-to-card/index.md#defer-delivery)) or with `payout.pushOptions` on a payment link.

## Returns, reversals, and failed payouts
